should I be tested?
A. It’s important to know your status so you can be confident you are not
infected and don’t spread the virus. If you are infected so you can get good
medical care.
Q. How long does a test take?
A. A test can take about 45 minutes total including counseling and results.
Q. When do I receive my test results?
A. You can receive your preliminary results 20 minutes after the test is
performed.
Q. Does every test require a needle stick?
A. No. There are oral tests available.
Q. Who do you test?
A. Anyone ages 13 and above.
Q. What is the effectiveness of the oral test?
A. The Oraquick test is 99.93% accurate.
Q. Can anyone be in the room while I’m being tested?
A. No
Q. What does a negative result mean?
A. The test did not detect HIV anti-bodies in your oral fluid
at this time.
Q. What does a preliminary positive result mean?
A. Preliminary positive result means that antibodies to HIV may be present in
your oral fluid and a second test will be performed to confirm the first oral
result.
Q. How can I avoid becoming infected?
A. You lower your risk of getting HIV by avoiding sexual exposure with an
infected partner or abstain from sex. Use a condom every time you have sex. Do
not share needles.
